Let's kill some stupid people

It's hard to be purely original in standup comedy. I mean, it's very hard to cover truly original concepts and points of view that someone else has not done before. This means you see certain types of jokes come up more often than not. So here's one of those common gripes that pops up far more than it should: stupid people shouldn't be allowed to interact with the rest of us/have children/vote etc. Stupid people are an easy target, they're not defined by some sort of racial, gender, social class or other characteristic that makes the person telling the joke into a bigot or xenophobe. "Stupid" isn't even a code word for any of these classes of people that you aren't allowed to poke fun at without offending people. Feel free to say you don't like stupid people, because being stupid is a choice. It's a choice that transcends all barriers and doesn't affect the good people... only the ones who cause more problems than solutions. Stupid is a very lazy way of cutting around actual social commentary. It's like "bad". I don't like bad people. Or people who do bad things. Nobody is going to argue with statements like that. But as soon as you start asking what makes a person "bad" you open up a can of worms. It's not as though the things that make a person "stupid" are any more pleasant or simple to talk about. Stupid is usually the result of a lot more social factors than individual failings. My gripe is that as far as jokes go, pointing out that stupid people do stupid things that annoy you isn't a revolutionary statement. As a concept to base a series of jokes around, it's really kind of... well, you know.
